Work commences at £50M A&E unit at Wexham Park Hospital

Work begins on new emergency department at Wexham Park Hospital in Slough.

Proposals for a new emergency A&E department are now taking place, with Kier given the go ahead to begin construction. The project will see separate children’s wards and minor injury rooms being built, as well as 36 individual rooms for major injury.

Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital in Slough, said the project will “transform services at the hospital”.

In 2014, the centre was rated as inadequate by the health watchdog, but by 2016, the Care Quality Commission said care provided by the hospital was good, in what was described as an “impressive turnaround”.

Back in 2016, Frimley Health Chief Executive Andrew Morris said: “A lot of the wards are clearly too old and need major refurbishment, so we’re hoping these new facilities will replace [some of the old beds].”

Chief of service for emergency medicine, Prem Premachandram, said the new unit has helped staff to become optimistic about the hospital’s future.

The proposal is part of a multi-million pound project to transform services at Wexham Park and Ascot’s Heatherwood Hospital over the next few years.

The hospital is expected to be completed towards the end of next year.
