Road investment boost for Councils

Councils in England have received an infrastructure boost with the news that the government will invest some £75M in road improvement projects.

Transport Minister Jesse Norman announced the funding, which will invest in 19 projects across the country, improving journeys for road users.

Local authorities were challenged to put forward schemes that could make a real difference to road users, with the winning projects including junction improvements, repairs and resurfacing, flood resilience measures, bridge and viaduct refurbishment, and improved drainage.

These improvements will cut congestion, reduce journey times and improve reliability, as well as helping to support local businesses and boost economic growth.

Transport Minister Jesse Norman said: “We are taking the big decisions for Britain’s future by investing in the infrastructure the country needs and ensuring motorists have the well maintained roads they expect and deserve.

“This investment will enable councils to repair roads and key infrastructure like bridges – boosting reliability on our roads so people can stay connected with family, friends and employment, while also keeping businesses connected with customers.

“Most of the schemes will be delivered within the next 12 months, so many drivers will see an immediate impact.”

The investment comes as part of some £6.1Bn that is being provided to local highway authorities in England, outside London, to help keep Britain moving and the economy growing.

Projects that will receive funding include:

  • the refurbishment of the A589 Greyhound Bridge, a £4.6M project in Lancashire to enable HGVs to access the bridge and therefore boost local business.
  • The renewal of the A361 dual carriageway, which will improve access to from Devon to the M5
  • Repair and maintenance of several key routes throughout Northumberland to boost tourism and access to the rural economy, including routes to Hadrian’s Wall.
