Dover Western Docks Revival makes landmark appointment

The Dover Western Docks Revival (DWDR) is today a step closer following WW Martin’s appointment as design and build contractor for the crucial Marina Control Building.

The £1 million contract will see the creation of a brand new hub which will house all marina operations including the Bascule Bridge and the Wellington Dock Navigation Channel lock gates.

Once built, the Marina Control Building will operate 24 hours, seven-days-a-week. The orientation of the building will allow for a clear, unobstructed line of sight across the new marina, the existing Wellington Dock, the Bascule Bridge and lock gates to ensure efficient operation and maintain public safety.

Dave Herrod, DWDR Programme Director at the Port of Dover, said: “Design inspiration for the building has been taken from current Dover Sea Sports Centre, built within the last ten years, which is located on the opposite side of the new Wellington Dock Navigation Channel.”

Inside, the building will accommodate a reception area and control offices on the first floor. Here, marina information and weather forecasts will be displayed alongside up-to-date admiralty charts.

Commenting on the Marina Control Building contract, Mike Darling – Director of WW Martin – added: “We are delighted to have been appointed to deliver this prestigious project as part of our continued partnership with the Port of Dover.”

For the uninitiated, DWDR represents the single biggest investment ever undertaken by the Port of Dover. It will provide a new 250 berth marina which will form a fundamental part of the redevelopment and serve as a catalyst for further regeneration.

According to Chris Windsor, Marina Manager at the Port of Dover: “Dover Western Docks Revival will deliver a transformed waterfront with opportunities for a host of shops, bars, cafes and restaurants set against the backdrop of a new marina, the harbour, the iconic White Cliffs and historic castle. This will further enhance Dover’s status as a first-class destination for Marina visitors and berth holders.”
