TfL and Bosch partnership to innovate London transport

Transport for London (TfL) has announced a surprise partnership with Bosch to give SMEs and start-ups the opportunity to innovate transport across the capital.

An 18-month pilot programme will pair specialists from TfL and Bosch with a variety of small businesses to help them understand how data and new technology can help solve key transport issues. These include the transition to efficient, greener and safer vehicles, ways to reduce congestion, and encouraging more Londoners to walk, cycle or take public transport.

During the collaboration, TfL will provide technical detail and a wide range of datasets to enable SMEs to test ideas and understand patterns in greater detail than previously possible. In return, Bosch will make available guidance and mentoring at a dedicated space for TfL and selected start-ups within their new ‘Connectory’ in Shoreditch.

London’s population has soared in recent years, with the latest forecasts predicting it will reach 10.8 million by 2041 – meaning an additional six million trips each day. As city hall looks to boost London’s reputation as an open and influential city for business, new talent will be essential in keeping the capital’s economy thriving.

“This initiative will foster closer working between London’s tech sector and other leading tech cities,” said Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. “If we are to use data and smart technology to help solve the biggest problems our city faces, it’s crucial we take a more collaborative approach. I see London’s future as a global ‘test-bed city’ for civic innovation, where the best ideas are developed, amplified and scaled. I’ve been clear I want London to become the world’s smartest city and this is a further step towards realising that ambition.”

Arun Srinivasan, Executive Vice President and Head of Mobility Solutions at Bosch UK, added: “We believe that the collaboration between Bosch and TfL will enable us to accelerate the development of technologies, products and services that have a positive impact on city life. We are very excited that Bosch’s ‘Connectory’ in London will get a focus on urban mobility, helping to solve the challenges at work in this great City, alongside a range of influential partners.”
