Work has started today on a new £39M training facility for the Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) in West Cumbria.
Construction has begun on a new centre for the CNC, consisting of a four storey-hub with classrooms and operational stores and offices, which will help deliver CNCs operational requirements to support the nuclear mission.
Two connected buildings will be home to live fire training areas.
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) will own the facility and lease it to the CNC.
Morgan Sindall has been appointed to construct the centre, with Deloitte Real Estate providing cost management and cost consultancy support.
Key individuals from CNC, NDA, Morgan Sindall and Deloitte, were joined by community representatives at site close to Sellafield, where a breaking ground ceremony took place.
The construction of the site is due to be completed by December 2016, and be fully operational by late 2017.
CNC Assistant Chief Constable Chris Armitt said: “The new training facilities represent an important and necessary step forward for the CNC, ensuring we continue to effectively deliver our mission of maintaining public safety and protecting civil nuclear sites. It will allow us to continue to meet the most stringent armed policing standards set by the College of Policing and UK Government regulatory standards for the protection of nuclear sites such as Sellafield.”
Kenna Kintrea, NDA Assurance Director, said: “Excellent partnership working and engagement by CNC and ourselves with the designers, architects, contractor and borough council have meant we have secured a site, budget, design and planning permission to start work on an crucial facility for the constabulary to help it support the nuclear clean-up and decommissioning mission.”
Peter Smyth, Area Director at Morgan Sindall, said: “It is enormously gratifying to be entrusted to deliver such an important project for the nation and we are keen to translate this sense of responsibility into a fantastic end product.”
