UK Construction Online takes a look at Trafalgar Place – Elephant and Castle, which has been shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize 2016.
Trafalgar Place is the flagship housing project delivered as part of Lendlease’s regeneration of Elephant and Castle, and comprises of 235 high-quality homes, including 25% affordable housing.
Elephant and Castle suffered mass damage during the Second World War, which led to it being known as “the Piccadilly of south London”, with new buildings built in the 1960’s often of poor quality.
The project is commissioned by Southwark Council and managed by Lend Lease, who hoped to restore the area completely, making it a lively, desirable place to live.
DRMM Architects has created variety through scale, with a mixture of mini-towers, apartment blocks and town houses. Each apartment has been designed to maximize light and space, and each have either a garden, balcony or roof terrace.

A new central square has been created for the community, with a subterranean car park underneath.
The commitment to environmentally aware and responsible building is demonstrated by the construction of two buildings made from cross-laminated timber.
RIBA 2016 said: “This scheme has an outstanding site plan which connects the development to the surrounding context and local community”.
The winner of the RIBA Stirling Prize will be announced on Thursday 6 October 2016.
