STA calls for timber chain to support CTI recommendations

The STA is calling for timber supply chain to support key themes outlined in Confederation of Timber Industries document.

The Structural Timber Association (STA) is calling for the timber supply chain to support the key themes for sector growth outlined in the Confederation of Timber Industries (CTI) document ‘The Confederation of Timber Industries: Growing Our Industrial Future’.

The new report highlights key topics for the supply chain to consider, which includes sustainability, value and growth, skills and education along with meeting the UK’s housing needs.

It also recognises the importance of role that the timber supply chain plays within the UK construction and manufacturing industries, putting forward key policy recommendations to encourage continued and consistent growth.

Amongst the issues highlighted are providing investment throughout the ‘Brexit’ period and ensuring new trade negotiations encourage export and recognise the significance of keeping UK industry resilient

Focusing on the low carbon credentials of the sector, sustainability recommendations include rewarding the timber sector’s role in maintaining and expanding forest areas, both within the UK and globally. Furthermore, the document puts forward that the principles and practice of the EU Timber Regulation should be protected and enforced.

Andrew Carpenter, Chief Executive of the Structural Timber Association said, “The STA fully supports the launch of the new CTI report, with many of the key policy recommendations such as those for skills and education, and housing, aligning with the on going efforts of the association.

“Supporting and encouraging the momentum for building high quality efficient housing, using a fabric first approach, is essential to ensure the growth of the timber sector remains on an upward trajectory.

“Of course, to do this, the skills and education recommendations are of paramount importance. Career opportunities across the timber supply chain are diverse, rewarding and varied, providing opportunities for school leavers, university graduates and those seeking further ‘on the job’ training.

“By supporting the principle tenets of this report, the timber supply chain can move together as an industry, to obtain further growth and increased market share.”
