A section of the M6 near Carlisle will receive £7million from Highways England for maintenance and repairs.
The M6 near Carlisle will be resurfaced and upgraded to reduce noise and make travel safer. The project begins at the start of April and is expected to be completed in August.
Work will include replacing a noise reduction barrier in the area to minimise disruption for residents and resurfacing the main motorway. A roundabout near junction 44 will also be upgraded.
Highways England Project Manager Jobert Fermilan said: “This work will ensure people using this part of Cumbria can continue to enjoy safe and smooth M6 journeys.”
“Delivering several different improvements in one package, as we did with the recent resurfacing work along the A66, will help minimise disruption and inconvenience to road users.”
Resurfacing works will include the north and southbound carriageways between junction 44 and junction 45 and the junction 44 roundabout which will also receive improved road markings. The new sound barrier along the northbound carriageway will reduce noise pollution for residents in Todhills, improving peace and privacy.
Work will be divided into two stages, beginning with the road resurfacing and the sound barrier which may require overnight lane closures. This will be followed by upgrades to the roundabout which will require some closures of the junction over five weekends.
Highways England has consulted with Cumbria County Council about the work and more details are expected to be released before the resurfacing begins. The public is invited to give feedback on the upgrades at consultation events due to be held by Highways England, details of which can be found on the M6 Carlisle North website.
