Contract awarded for Oxford Brookes University Facility

London-based construction firm GRAHAM has been awarded the contract to design and build Oxford Brooke’s new university facility.

The new interdisciplinary university facility at Oxford Brooke’s Headington campus will provide courses in arts, architecture, computing, engineering and the built environment. GRAHAM was awarded the £18.2million contract as part of a 10-year investment plan for the university.

Sitting to the east of Headington Hill Hall, within the protected Headington Hill Conservation Area, the new structure will replace the existing Helena Kennedy building. The facility will include purpose-built labs, workshops and studio spaces for research and teaching, with an aim of encouraging collaboration between different disciplines.

GRAHAM’s London office director, Rob Joyce said: “The construction of the new technology building forms part of Oxford Brookes University’s vision to deliver new and exciting spaces fit for learning, innovation and technical making skills.”

“Construction of the new building will support the University’s withdrawal from the Wheatley Campus and bring forward high-quality facilities for academic use. We will draw on our extensive experience of delivering educational builds for forward-thinking institutions to implement this important phase in the University’s estate programme.”

The contract will cover work including design and construction of the new building and enabling works, external works and drainage. Construction is expected to start in May 2019 and take 64 weeks to complete.

Other works at the university include upgrades of other facilities as well as improvements to residential accommodation. The University Framework Panel set out £5million worth of projects in 2016 for the estate investment programme to improve facilities across the campus.
