Glenigan have revealed their latest leader board of the UKs top civil engineers that are wining work, naming Royal BAM as top of the board, having gained an order book totalling nearly £880M, followed by Balfour Beatty with £684.8M, VolkerWessels with £477.7M, and Morgan Sindall, who placed one position higher than Ferrovial.
Royal BAM’s substantial lead, compared with the order books of its fellow engineers, was likely bolstered by the shares it has been granted in working on the £1Bn Silvertown Tunnel project in East London, of which Ferrovial’s subsidiary Cintra is also working on, as well as other joint ventures like the £175M Smart Motorway scheme with Morgan Sindall.
In relation to the proportions of work, the Royal BAM group had 64% of its overall £1.4Bn order book for the second quarter of 2019 as civil engineering based work while all of Ferrovial’s UK projects were civil engineering based, according to market analysis by Glenigan.
Civil engineering work, in general, comprised less than a fifth, 18%, of the total construction orders of the nation’s top one hundred contractors after falling from 24% at the same time last year, with Glenigan market analysis showing that civil contracts in Q2 of 2019 totalled a figure just less than £7.6Bn.
Furthermore, of the top 100 contractors in the UK 68 contractors have taken on civil engineering work while the remaining 32 have been focused on building works, and it is determined that this major drop is a consequence of some major contractors dropping out of the latest 12 months rolling total.
Glenigan’s Economics Director, Allan WilĂ©n stated: “Major infrastructure schemes, including Thames Tideway, HS2 and Hinckley Point, are forecast to drive civil engineering activity over the forecast period.
“The value of smaller scale civil engineering projects starting on site is also expected to improve, having fallen back sharply over the last three years.”
The HIS Markit/CIP UK construction index revealed that civil engineering had contracted at its fastest rate in ten years but Glenigan market analysis, again, reveals forecasts if a revival in civil engineering contracts, which predictions of a more than 10 % rise in projects.
