Asphalt and concrete provider company, Aggregate Industries, has officially laid their landmark one millionth tonne of material on the Highways England resurfacing project on the A14 between Huntingdon and Cambridge.
The Cambridge to Huntingdon Improvement Scheme, upon completion, will feature approximately 21 miles of new road surface provided by Aggregate Industries and laid utilising local primary and secondary aggregate supply sources.
Aggregate Industries is currently supplying the A14 project with their 10mm SuperThin asphalt which reduces the noise emitted by vehicles driving across it, therefore abiding by the stringent new rules put into place to reduce noise pollution cause by highways which pass through urban areas.
In two days alone, during the resurfacing of the Bar Hill Junction, Aggregate Industries produced 5,600 tonnes of asphalt.
The Managing Director of Contracting at Aggregate Industries, Paddy Murphy stated: “It is a great achievement to have laid our millionth tonne of material on Highways England’s A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon Improvement scheme, currently the UK’s largest and most prestigious major infrastructure project.
“Reaching this milestone was made possible by working safely and in complete collaboration with the A14 Integrated Delivery Team, and the completed carriageway upgrades will be of great benefit to the local area.”
The Managing Director of Asphalt at Aggregate Industries, Chris Hudson added: “From the outset, our investment in the new asphalt plant emphasised our commitment to delivering this project, and these milestones put our achievements into perspective. We’re looking forward to the new, improved A14 being fully up and running.”
Aggregate Industries’ achievement of this milestone is a product of their on-site asphalt plant producing, overall, 350,000 tonnes of asphalt for use on road improvement schemes, their Bardon Hill, Peterborough, and Purfleet plants producing 150,000 tonnes of asphalt, and their manufacture of 500,000 tonnes of Cement Bound Granular Mixtures (CBGM)
