The beginning of construction works at Plymouth’s Marine Enterprise Zone were marked by representatives from the Plymouth City Council and Kier Regional Building Western and Wales last week, marking the commencement of the second phase in the Oceansgate scheme.
This second phase of construction will entail the erection of a three storey office building as well as the provision of 15 light industrial units, at a cost of £7.9M, with completion scheduled for the summer of 2020.
The Oceansgate development is an imperative tool for improving Plymouth’s marine sector, which is the city’s current strategy and reason for the most recent project, with the new offices following the completion of the first phase of Oceansgate buildings in 2018.
The project is being funded by the Plymouth City Council as well as the European Regional Development Fund after being procured through the Southern Construction Framework.
The Area Manager for Devon at Kier Regional Building, Doug Lloyd stated: “We are delighted to start on site and begin work on this great addition to Plymouth’s Marine Enterprise Zone. Plymouth is synonymous with marine development and this investment will enable the continued growth in the sector, supporting both expanding marine businesses and attracting new specialists to the area.
“Kier has been established in Plymouth for over 90 years and we recognise the importance of continued investment to drive the local economy and investment in local people through employment and skills. We will work closely with Building Plymouth, the local education establishments and employment organisations to provide this vital career support “
Plymouth City Councillor, Tudor Evans added: “We are pushing ahead with our plans to support and develop Plymouth’s marine and maritime economy, attracting new businesses and supporting the growth of those already based here, which will pay dividends for the local economy. Oceansgate has a very big role to play in this.”
