Highways England engineers carrying out bridge repairs in Cumbria will use special paint which will reduce disruption.
Bridge repair works along the A590 near Ulverston in Cumbria, will see the use of a new paint treatment which will help minimise inconvenience to road users and speed up maintenance.
The £231,000 repairs project will start next weekend, and involves two bridges carrying the A590 over the main railway line for Barrow. Engineers will work overnight, and use the paint treatment to keep disruption to a minimum.
The bridges, at Red Syke and Dykelands between Ulverston and Dalton-in-Furness, are to benefit from concrete repairs as well as repainting over 8 Saturday nights between the middle of August and the middle of October when the A590 will be reduced to a single lane – between 10pm and 10am on each of the Saturday nights – with temporary traffic lights in place to manage traffic.
Highways England Project Manager Mark Mosley said: “It is difficult to plan and deliver maintenance at these locations as the bridges are over the busy main line to Barrow but this project will complete repairs and maintenance we started in 2014 when we removed old concrete and cleaned the steel and concrete supports.
“This year’s work will focus on finishing repairs and repainting the bridges and to do that we are using an innovative paint protection system requiring only 2 coats of paint which means we can do the job more quickly and minimise inconvenience to both road and rail users.”
The Saturday night to Sunday morning works are scheduled to take place from 10pm on the following Saturdays: 13 and 20 August, 3, 10, 17 and 24 September and 8 and 22 October. Work will only start within the 10pm to 10am window once access to the track under the bridge has been cleared by Network Rail.
