Video: Stunning demolition of bridge in Pretoria

The moment an overpass bridge across the N1 highway between Polokwane and Mokopane in Pretoria, South Africa was demolished has been captured in a stunning video.

The footage shows the moments leading up to an ear-splitting boom being heard before the bridge is seen exploding in the distance.

Both the north and southbound carriageways of the N1 under the Atterbury Road bridges were closed as the demolition work took place.

The demolition was part of South African Roads Agency Limited’s (Sanral) strategy of major upgrades and construction of the N1 ring road around Polokwane. The bridge was demolished in preparation for the construction of a new overpass to accommodate the new N1 re-alignment.

Manager at Sarnal, Alex van Niekerk, said: “The demolition of the eastbound bridge will be another step towards the revamping of the interchange, as part of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project.”
