Prime Minister Theresa May will use her highly anticipated speech on Brexit today to give the biggest hints yet as to what Britain’s exit negotiations from the European Union will seek to achieve.
Mrs May will outline twelve key negotiation objectives, with the government unwilling to compromise on red line issues of border control and regaining the country’s sovereignty.
The government has received heavy criticism from some quarter for failing to provide enough clarity over its Brexit strategy.
The Prime Minister is expected to say that the UK will not be “half in, half out”, signalling the government’s intentions to pursue a ‘hard’ Brexit and leave the single market.
Mrs May is expected to say: “We seek a new and equal partnership – between an independent, self-governing, global Britain and our friends and allies in the EU.
“Not partial membership of the European Union, associate membership of the European Union, or anything that leaves us half in, half out. We do not seek to adopt a model already enjoyed by other countries. We do not seek to hold on to bits of membership as we leave.
“The United Kingdom is leaving the European Union. My job is to get the right deal for Britain as we do.”
The government has already signalled its intention to give formal notice of the UK’s intention to leave the European Union by triggering Article 50 before the end of March.
The construction industry will be looking for more detail as it contends with a skills shortage that could be further exacerbated by a mass exodus of EU nationals working within the sector. The government’s negotiation priorities are said to include securing the rights of EU citizens in Britain and retaining workers’ rights.
The speech is expected to see the value of the pound fall yet again, which may lead to more price rises for the industry to contend with.
