Key demolition complete at HS2 Euston

Contractors have completed two major demolition projects at the HS2 Euston site ahead of construction.

Buildings have been demolished at the HS2 Euston site to the west of the future station reveal, ahead of the construction of new platforms. The buildings demolished were the Ibis hotel on Cardington street and the National Temperance Hospital buildings to make way for the six new 400 metre platforms.

Over two-thirds of demolitions in London to make way for the high-speed rail and land is set to be released around the stations supporting up to 2,000 new homes. Archaeological and ecological work is also taking place as part of the HS2 ‘Green Corridor’ project.

HS2 Ltd’s Euston Programme Director, Rob Carr, said: “HS2 will transform Euston, delivering much-needed extra capacity, improving journeys and unlocking the opportunity for thousands of new jobs and homes.”

“Across the capital, we are making strong progress, with our pioneering archaeological programme in full swing and more than two thirds of demolitions now complete. I’d like to thank all those involved in helping us hit this latest milestone and I look forward to the next steps in delivering HS2’s new gateway to the capital.”

Over 6,000 tonnes of material was removed during the demolitions of which 95% is expected to be recycled. Two time capsules were discovered during the work and are being preserved for future study.

The demolition was delivered by a Costain and Skanska joint venture (CSjv) using a top-down demolition method whereby machines are lifted on top of the buildings and protective screens are erected to minimise noise and dust. A mace/Dragados joint venture has won contracts for future phases of construction.
