Leigh Canal Scheme Get Go-Ahead

A new canal side development in Leigh, Greater Manchester has been given the go-ahead by Wigan Council. Your Housing Group (YHG) is to build 266 homes

Your Housing Group (YHG) is to build 266 homes, 113 are for shared ownership and 113 for affordable rent. The £31 million development will be on West Bridgewater Street, next to the Leeds Liverpool canal, and will comprise of one-bed maisonettes, one and two-bedroom apartments, and, two and three-bedroom houses, which will all have off street parking along with front and rear gardens, with some houses benefitting from canal views.

The development will be known as Waterside Point, and, is to be designed by Wigan based MCI Developments.

Richard Jones, who is Director of Growth at Your Housing Group said: “It’s great to work with MCI Developments, a local contractor, to bring much needed affordable homes to this part of Leigh, enabling local people to get on the property ladder. This is a large development, which will enhance the surrounding area, and will help breathe new life into this part of the town. Leigh is ideally located for community to surrounding town and to the cities of Manchester and Liverpool.”

With the Regional Managing Director for MCI Developments, Alex Wood adding, “MCI are delighted to be working with YHG on this scheme. We are really looking forward to seeing the benefits the project will bring to Leigh town centre and at the same time providing much needed affordable housing to the area.”

YHG is one of the UK Government’s housing agency, Homes England’s Strategic Partners. The development at the canal-side in Leigh has also been part funded with a grant from the Shared Ownership and Affordable Homes Programme.

Nick Cumberland, Senior Specialist, Home Ownership and Supply for Homes England said. “Its great to see one of our partners using their resources and expertise to develop much needed new homes. This development will provide people with the opportunity to buy or rent high quality new homes and increase he overall housing offer in the area.”
