Tendering process begins for new port visitors centre in Qatar

The tendering process for an iconic visitor centre at the new £4.7Bn port in Qatar has begun.

The New Port Project Tender Committee is inviting UK and international companies to register their interest to receive tender documents for the chance to design and build the project. The companies eligible to apply for tender are international businesses, local companies that are certified by the Central Tenders Committee as Grade A Building Works, and joint ventures where the Central Tenders Committee certifies the lead partner.

The port is located south of Doha and has ambitions to be a world leading facility and become integral to the economic future of Qatar. It will feature a 3000sq m port visitor centre, which will include a 200-seat auditorium, a 3D interactive simulator, an aquarium, specialist exhibits, and anew base for the Qatar Emiri Naval Forces.

In addition to catering to the expected increased growth in container traffic, the project will accommodate general cargo traffic, offshore support vessels, coast guard vessels, a marine support unit and the importation of livestock, vehicles, and bulk grain.

It is expected that in upcoming years, Qatar will experience considerable growth in terms of importing raw materials and goods, highlighting the need for a modern, state-of-the-art commercial port facility.

With Qatar is due to host the World Cup in 2022, the port will provide a new major gateway to Qatar that will service increasing trade requirements, support key objectives proposed in the Qatar National Vision 2030, and offer the opportunity for export industry development.

The creation of the new port will be undertaken with the protection of the environment of paramount importance. With this in mind, multiple simulation studies, physical modelling, geotechnical and metoceanic analysis and in-depth environmental studies have been carried out.

The project is due for completion in 2016.

The final date for companies interested in registering their interest is 26 July.
