The University of Huddersfield have appointed Morgan Sindall to build its new landmark teaching facility.
Located on the prominent Shorehead location, the 7,500sq m, six-storey building will house the University’s Law School and the School of Music, Humanities and Media, and also link into the University’s Student Central Building, which was completed in January 2014, at a cost of £22.5M.
The new £27.5M building will create new teaching space that includes large tiered lecture theatres and it is envisaged the existing law, music and humanities rooms will provide enough free space to allow the University to offer future students a wider choice of courses.
The building has been designed in mind to compliment the existing university facilities including both Student Central and the adjacent Creative Arts Building.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bob Cryan said: “We are delighted to be working with Morgan Sindall on the latest major development to our campus. The University is committed to ensuring that we provide the best possible environment for the growing number of students who choose to study here and contribute so positively to the local economy.
“We are also committed to our town, and are very pleased to be able to work with local businesses on a building that will take such a prominent place in the Huddersfield landscape.”
Operations Director at Morgan Sindall’s Leeds office, Chris Brown, commented: “This is a key building for both the university and the town. It is a fantastic project to be involved with and our appointment builds on the existing relationship we have with the University of Huddersfield.
“We very much look forward to getting on site and creating this amazing building which will mark Huddersfield out as a forward-thinking town.”
The new building is due to be completed by the beginning of 2017.
