Trent Basin goes ‘continental’ in new redevelopment plan

Work has begun on a new £90M riverside development in Trent Basin, located within Nottingham Waterside, that aims to emulate residential developments normally found in Amsterdam or Copenhagen.

Trent Basin will comprise around 350 low energy homes, with the waterside surroundings being reflected aesthetically by tall canal-style houses, with project developer Blueprint’s chief executive saying “possibility of floating homes” situated around the dock area are also being explored.

The development area has a long waterside frontage to the River Trent and an inland harbour, which was formerly a busy inland port.

Mr Ebbs said: “Imagine a new residential neighbourhood but think continental examples, not suburban but not dense urban, the sort of thing you would find in Amsterdam or Copenhagen.

“We aim to develop Trent Basin as a model of 21st century sustainable living where the guiding principles will be people, place and planet.

“This will be a new kind of community which will be part urban and part suburban; compact but not dense; a well-designed, neighbourly community not dominated by cars, where people can benefit from both city living and the nearby countryside.”

Blueprint has begun construction on the first 45 energy efficient homes that will be ready for purchase by spring 2016.

The site will be fully developed in phases over the next three years and is seen as playing a major part in the larger regeneration of the entire Nottingham waterside area.

Nottingham City Council leader Councillor, Jon Collins, said: ”We have long-held ambitions to see this site and the wider Waterside Zone developed for residential use, so I’m glad to see it has started to get underway. It has proved difficult to persuade developers that our vision to transform this unloved industrial area into a highly sought-after community is the right one, which is why we have made some bold moves to get where we are today,

“There are few sites in the city which give us the opportunity to create a high-quality new development like this, which will help to bring jobs to the city not only during construction, but also by making Nottingham a more appealing proposition for new businesses.”
