Locations of first garden villages announced

The government has revealed the 14 sites for new villages that will see a total 48,000 homes built across England.

The new garden villages from Devon to Derbyshire, Cornwall to Cumbria will provide between 1,500 and 10,000 homes as new village communities are established.

The garden villages will be built on locations such as green belt land and a former airfield in Deenethorpe, Northampton and have access to a £6M fund over the next two financial years to support the delivery of the schemes.

The funding will enable the sites to unlock their full potential and minimise delays.

The government said the areas are to be their own separate entities and will not merely be extensions of existing urban locations.

Three other larger garden towns were also approved – Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, Taunton, Somerset and Harlow & Gilston, Essex and Hertfordshire – with an additional £1.4M of funding made available to support their development.

Housing and Planning Minister Gavin Barwell said: “Locally-led garden towns and villages have enormous potential to deliver the homes that communities need.

“New communities not only deliver homes, they also bring new jobs and facilities and a big boost to local economies. These places combined could provide almost 200,000 homes.”
