Communities secretary calls for protection of birds in new buildings

James Brokenshire MP has said that developers must ensure the protection of birds and other wildlife when designing and constructing new buildings.

The Communities Secretary has voiced concern for the protection of birds and other wildlife in the construction of new buildings. He spoke about netting being used to cover trees and hedgerows, reminding developers of their need to do whatever possible to protect local habitats.

In a letter to developers, he emphasised the fact that birds are protected under the Wildlife Countryside act 1981. He has not ruled out taking action if developers do not comply with protection guidelines and take measures to ensure minimal damage to the environment.

The Rt Hon James Brokenshire MP said: “Whilst building new homes is vital, we must take every care to avoid unnecessary loss of habitats that provide much-needed space for nature, including birds.”

“Developments should enhance natural environments, not destroy them. Netting trees and hedgerows is only likely to be appropriate where it is genuinely needed to protect birds from harm during development.”

“I hope developers will take these words on board and play their full role to make sure we can deliver new communities in an environmentally sustainable way.”

Revised guidelines state that developers must aim to protect and enhance the natural environment. Projects should minimise damage and the upcoming Environment Bill will require plans to leave the environment in a stronger state than it was before construction.

The plans were welcomed by the RSPB and the Home Builders Federation. Last year the Home Builders Federation incorporated 9million trees into housing developments along with other plant life and has reiterated its commitment to preserving biodiversity.
