The construction and property development company Kier have completed the second phase of construction on the £18M Nicholas Chamberlaine Secondary School in Bedworth, Warwickshire, on behalf of the Department for Education.
The two phase Nicholas Chamberlaine Secondary School project, formed a component of the East Midlands Priority Schools Batch A from the Department for Education and consists of a three-storey teaching block and single storey sports block, with associated cladding, glazing, utilities connections, drainage, hardstanding, paths, and landscaping also included.
The third phase of this scheme will go on to include the demolition of the previous school building as well as the landscaping of the space on which it once stood.
Throughout the construction process sustainability and minimising carbon footprint was a key focus for the contractors who used energy efficient lighting, super eco cabins, and opted for electric heaters rather than diesel.
The new buildings are now able to accommodate the school’s 1,350 pupils who were kept within the previous school’s outdated buildings throughout the construction process, meaning that contractors needed to work in the middle of the school courtyard and around the students as they would pass between buildings.
The Managing Director at Kier Regional Building Central, Mark Pausey stated: “We are very pleased to hand phase two of Nicholas Chamberlaine Secondary School over to the client and to deliver modern facilities for pupils at the school.
“Throughout the build, we have actively engaged with the local community through site visits for pupils and staff, we have also engaged with over 1,000 school pupils to discuss careers in the built environment. We have had two trainees on site, as well as a graduate engineer and graduate design manager – it has been very important for us to promote and support the next generation through the delivery of this project.”
