As part of the government’s ongoing efforts to reverse the ‘Beeching Cuts’ from back in the 1960s, a £20M fund has been organised to facilitate the construction of new train stations, with two new stations in Pye Corner, Newport, and Bow Street, Ceredigion, already confirmed under the new fund.
Going into more detail, the funding forms the third round of the ‘New Stations Fund’ and has already seen to the opening of the Pye Corner station in Newport, with the construction of the Bow Street station in Ceredigion set to be completed in the near future.
This third round of ‘New Stations’ funding forms part of the wider ‘Reversing Beeching Fund’, which has a value of £500M, with the first and second rounds having a combined value of £40M and assisting with the construction of ten new train stations.
The Ceredigion station, once completed, will be situated in a small village on the outskirts of Aberystwyth and will assist with reducing rail line congestion leading into the major Welsh town.
The Rail Minister, Chris Heaton-Harris stated: “Disused railway stations have been emblematic of left behind towns for too long. We are determined to reconnect communities and improve journeys, and the thousands of passengers already using Pye Corner is proof of the importance of investing in our railway.
“This new funding will both restore local stations to their former glory, and build new ones, establishing vital links for communities and strengthening connections across our union.”
The Secretary of State for Wales, Simon Hart added: “Investing in transport and improving services for people is a vital step forward in increasing opportunities across Wales and better connecting all parts of the country.
“Building new stations in Wales will drive economic growth in every corner of the country, promoting regeneration and the creation of new jobs.”
