Leica Geosystems – products for a range of industries

With solutions that capture, analyse and present spatial information, Leica Geosystems combines 200 years of experience with the very best products for a range of industries.

Tahir Sharif is EMEA Director Software Solutions at Leica Geosystems and he spoke about the Company’s products, how crucial BIM is to its success and the BIM Show Live experience.

Could you tell us a bit about the Company and its origins?

With close to 200 years of experience pioneering solutions to measure the world, Leica Geosystems products and services are trusted by professionals worldwide to help them capture, analyse, and present spatial information. Leica Geosystems is best known for its broad array of products that capture accurately, model quickly, analyse easily, visualise and present spatial information. Those who use Leica products every day trust them for their dependability, the value they deliver, and the superior customer support.

Based in Heerbrugg, Switzerland, Leica Geosystems is a global company with tens of thousands of customers supported by more than 3,800 employees in 33 countries and hundreds of partners located in more than 120 countries around the world. Leica Geosystems is part of Hexagon, Sweden.

How did you become involved with the technology you are? Was there a gap in the market and if so, how did you set about filling it?

Throughout its 200-year history, Leica Geosystems has always been at the forefront of solution hardware and software innovation and a leader in the field of spatial information. It is a renowned and trusted brand in the geospatial, survey and construction industry as well as many others. In recent years with the expanding use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in the construction industry, we have identified the critical role we play in utilising this and taking BIM out of the office and into the field.

What, in your opinion, sets the Company apart from any contemporaries?

Our statement ‘when it has to be right’ is how the organisation and all its staff feel about the solutions they provide. The levels of quality, eye for detail and unsurpassed experience in the design, development and implementation of geospatial hardware and software mean that the brand and its products are renowned around the world.

Can you give us an idea of the type of products you offer?

We offer solutions that capture, analyse and present spatial information. These solutions comprise of unique hardware and software packages for a wide range of industries. Some of the core offerings include Total Stations (modern-day theodolites) that measure angles and distances, the basis of nearly all geospatial surveys.

Leica Geosystems is constantly innovating in the field of 3D laser scanning and other mobile mapping based systems, which allows for the rapid collection of 3D data. You can find our solutions almost anywhere from large scale aerial imaging used to capture data on a huge scale, to a distance measurement tool, the Disto, common to nearly all architects, engineers and construction workers.

How are these used to improve the construction industry?

These solutions are utilised throughout the construction industry as they offer stakeholders a wide range of benefits. The hardware and software solutions allow stakeholders to improve the quality and efficiency in which spatial information is captured and presented.

This in turn improves project efficiencies, reduces costs and waste, as well as improving site safety.

How crucial would you say they are in the move towards BIM?

With common BIM adoption within the industry focused on the office, utilising BIM software to improve efficiencies and reduce cost through the use of 3D intelligent models, we have identified the critical role we play around BIM adoption and the importance of bringing some of these benefits directly to the construction site through the Leica BIM Field Trip.

These BIM Field Trip solutions assist the construction industry in bringing BIM data to and from the office, through workflows such as construction layout, 3D laser scanning for as-builts or validation of as-constructed as well as machine control.

How successful was your stand at BIM Show Live?

We feel shows like BIM Show Live are very important for the sharing of knowledge and new technology. The team that attended felt that the event went very well, with the quality of presentations and level of expertise being very high.

The stand was visited by a large variety and number of industry personnel interested in finding out more about Leica’s BIM Field Trip and the benefits it could bring to their organisation and projects.

Did your organisation learn anything new from being there?

The team felt that the level of experience and competences around BIM had taken a significant leap forward from last year’s show, with a lot of people turning their attention to how we take BIM out of the design office, onto the construction site and through into asset operations.
