Government announce £3.3M grant to rebuild flood-damaged bridge

A grant of £3.3M has been approved by the government to rebuild Tadcaster road bridge after it was badly damaged by the floods.

Ministerial Flood Recovery Envoy for Yorkshire, Robert Goodwill announced £3.3M of funding for the restoration of Tadcaster Build and the construction of a temporary footbridge for the community whilst the work is ongoing.

Structural assessments are underway in preparation for North Yorkshire Council to make urgent repairs to the 300-year-old listed bridge. The funding is in addition to Prime Minister David Cameron’s pledge of £40M to improve and repair flood defences after the damage that was caused by the recent storms.

Working with the local landowner, the plan is for a re-assembled temporary footbridge which will be built by a British firm, to provide locals with access to both sides of the river whilst construction is underway on the main bridge.

Robert Goodwill said: “The floods in Yorkshire have been devastating for residents and businesses across the county and we have seen the partial collapse of the Tadcaster bridge split the community in two.

“We have made the repair of the bridge a national priority and I am pleased to announce that today we are providing £3.3M to restore this important route. I am determined to ensure I do everything I can to help and this is an important step in keeping the recovery effort on track in Yorkshire.”

Other bridges in Yorkshire such as Elland Bridge in Calderdale suffered serious damage during the recent floods, with a 180-year-old bridge collapsed in Copley, near Halifax.

The government have invested almost £200M in recovery of Storm Eva and Storm Desmond , including £60M for communities and local authorities, and £1M in matched funding for charities to Cumbria, Lancashire and Northumberland.

The government has also pledged £40M for rebuilding local transport and infrastructure for flood affected areas in Cumbria and Lancashire.
