Met Office warns parts of the UK heavy rain may cause more flooding

The Met Office has issued an amber warning for more heavy rain in the Grampian, Central, Tayside and Fife areas of Scotland.

The “be prepared” warnings follow recent flooding across the UK, with the possibility of further flooding, as parts of the country are battered with rain and high winds.

The police in Tayside have warned that many roads are closed and affected by rising water across the region.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) has issued about 30 flood warnings.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Over the period ending late Monday, many areas look like receiving a further 40-80 mm of rain, with some of the high ground receiving 100-150 mm – this in addition to that which has fallen over the previous 24 hours.”

A number of roads remain closed in Perthshire, Angus and Aberdeenshire while others have been affected by surface water.

Some areas of Scotland could have 15-25mm (0.6 to one inch) of rain, with as much as 40mm (1.6 inches) over high ground, leading to a continued risk of flooding due to already-saturated ground.

Parts of Northern Ireland, Wales, the South West and North East of England have been issued a yellow warning for heavy showers.

Further flooding in parts of the North East, Devon, Cornwall and Gloucester and Worcester are particularly at risk, with many rivers still flooded across England.

The Environmental Agency has 30 flood warnings and 158 flood alerts in place across England, with 40 additional pumps dispatched to the north of England.

The latest forecasts follow the devastation caused by a month of storms and floods, most recently last week’s Storm Frank.

Clare Dinnis, flood risk manager at the Environment Agency, said: “With more wet weather due this week we are monitoring the situation across the country closely and will issue further flood warnings as required.

“We will continue our ongoing work to repair flood defences, protect communities, and pump away flood water.”
