Weld Off 2016 competition launched

A competition to acknowledge the skills of the UK’s best young welders and help them further their career in the industry has been launched by equipment manufacturer Morris Site Machinery.

Weld Off 2016 is returning for its third year and is looking for entries from gifted welders aged between 16 -26 who are in college or employment.

The theme of this year’s competition will be celebrating Great British milestones by challenging entrants with the theme ‘God Save the Queen’.

The young welders will be able to take inspiration from some significant milestones in 2016, which will see the Queen celebrate her 90th birthday in May; the Prince’s Trust reach its 40th anniversary and it will also be 40 years since the Sex Pistol’s claimed the number one spot in the charts with ‘God Save the Queen’.

Morris Site Machinery’s welding brand ArcGen, in conjunction with Speedy Services, EAL and KEMPPI will look for young welders to come up with some welded creativity inspired by the theme.

A series of challenges will await the four teams who make the final. The finalists will be able to demonstrate their ability and knowledge with a Q&A and safety round, a welding skills section and a creative test on the theme ‘God Save the Queen’.

The winners will claim the top prize of £1,000 for their welding department or workplace, plus £500 for each member of the winning team.

Phil Winnington, Managing Director at Morris Site Machinery, said: “This is a great opportunity for budding young welders to think around this very current theme and bring to life their own spin on it.  We’re expecting some great interpretations and fantastic entries to demonstrate all the talent out there. The UK welding industry is a competitive one and we want to help young people get ahead and enhance their skills and knowledge with this competition.”

The deadline for entries to Weld Off 2016 is 11 March, with the competition to be judged in two stages. Those up for the challenge can apply via paper-based/online entry for the first round and the competitive live Weld Off final will be held on 11 May at Speedy’s National Distribution Centre in Centurion Park, Tamworth.
