Affordable housing underway in Westminster

Construction has begun on the part of the Church Street Regeneration Programme which covers Luton Street in the City of Westminster, prompting the delivery of 168 homes, more than one third of which will fall under the classification of affordable housing.

Specifically, construction work will provide 109 homes that will be reserved for the housing market, in addition to a further 59 homes which will be available for social rent as part of affordable housing, while also establishing public amenities like 76 underground car parking spaces, a three-court sports hall, and a community space.

The contractor company Bouygues UK are carrying out the construction of this project under the instruction and commission of the Westminster City Council and the property development company Linkcity, with completion of the project scheduled for 2022.

The Westminster City Council Cabinet Member for Finance, Property, and Regeneration, Councillor Rachael Robathan stated: “This is the beginning of an exciting new future for Luton Street and part of our overall commitment to deliver 1,850 new affordable homes across Westminster.

“We have worked with our local residents to make sure we deliver the right scheme for the community. We believe that the new sports hall and community space will be a good thing for the local area, alongside the much-needed new affordable homes.

“Luton Street is a major part of the Church Street Masterplan and demonstrates our commitment to supporting the community.”

The Deputy Managing Director of Linkcity, Olivier Soulier added: “It is exciting to be working again with Westminster City Council, helping to turn the borough’s vision for high-quality affordable housing into a reality.

“Breaking ground today is a huge milestone in bringing forward this project that will provide much-needed new homes and significant benefits for the local community.”

The Church Street Regeneration Programme is predicted to provide the City of Westminster with a total of 1,240 new homes, more than half of which will be affordable after the council pledged to create 1,850 affordable homes across Westminster by 2023.
