Highways England improve foot and cycle paths in Walsall

Highways England will be commissioning upgrades to footpaths and cycle routes on junction ten of the M6 so as to improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists while also providing an alternative route during construction on the Walsall roundabout in the Midlands.

Throughout the construction of the £78M improvements to junction ten of the M6 and Walsall roundabout, pedestrian and cyclist access will be significantly restricted, making the establishment of an alternative route all the more pressing.

Local residents are therefore invited to an information event on the 11th October between 2pm and 6pm in the Bentley Public Realm area which will detail plans of the improvements to Bloxwich Lane, Churchill Road, and Queen Elizabeth Avenue.

These improvements will include the widening of footpaths, establishment of pedestrian crossings, improvement of school safety, and also the improvement of street lighting.

The project will be carried out as a joint venture between Highways England, Walsall Council, and Black Country Local Enterprise Partnership and is scheduled for completion by the end of March 2020.

The Highways England Project Manager, David Reed stated: “We understand that major schemes such as the much-needed upgrade of junction ten can cause disruption for local communities and we appreciate people’s patience.

“Our designated funds enable us to provide environmental, social and economic benefits to the people, communities and businesses who live and work alongside our strategic road network.

“This particular project will improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and schoolchildren in the area not only during the junction ten works but beyond.”

The Deputy Leader of Walsall Council, Councillor Adrian Andrew added: “The improvements to junction ten will transform journeys for residents and commercial traffic. These additional improvements bring benefits to the wider community providing a safer environment for cyclists and schoolchildren alike.”
