Work starts on £65M landmark development in Sheffield

An in-house ground breaking ceremony has been held in Sheffield to celebrate the beginning of construction on a £65M landmark

Key investors flew in from China for a traditional Chinese style ground breaking ceremony, where sand surrounding a plinth was turned over with the help of special shovels.

The construction plans have commenced on New Era Square, a 20 storey mixed leisure, commercial and residential development which will transform an area close to the city centre, between London Road and Bramall Lane.

Sheffield-based company New Era Development (UK) Ltd are behind the plans, with the scheme designed by Sheffield-based architects Hadfield Cawkwell Davidson. The building works are being led by Derbyshire-based Bowmer and Kirkland.

The first floor will be transformed into office space for professional service businesses, an exhibition hall and a Sheffield City Region China Business Incubator chaired by Richard Caborn, with the purpose of enhancing enterprise and trade links between China and the UK.

The third floor will consist of around 700 student accommodation units, plus micro flats and cluster flats.

Speaking at the event, Jerry Cheung, Managing Director at New Era Development (UK) Ltd, said: “This is an exciting day for everyone at New Era and we are thrilled to see work commencing on the project. The project aims to create a cosmopolitan, urban destination, including a new public square to bring people from the community together.

Once construction is complete, the project aims to create a few hundred new jobs.
