Shelter Scotland on hand to help with housing street clinic

A street clinic will be set up today in Stirling to offer help and guidance to people on a range of housing issues.

The event will be a first for Stirling and will see experts from charity Shelter Scotland being available to discuss such problems are poor quality housing, landlord issues, rent and mortgage issues, fuel poverty, debt and homelessness.

A large gazebo will be set up by the charity on Port Street to enable experts to give people housing advice.

Graeme Brown, Director of Shelter Scotland, said: “No one should have to face bad housing and homelessness alone and our advisors will be on hand throughout the day to help. No problem is too small or too big and I encourage anyone who is facing a housing issue to come and speak to one of our experts on Port Street.

“Whether you’re facing rent or mortgage arrears, want help in resolving a problem with your landlord, are living in poor quality housing or just want more information about the help and support Shelter Scotland offers, we’ll be there for you throughout the day.

Mr Brown said that there was a misconception that Shelter Scotland can only provide help to homeless people. He commented: “We can help with any issue relating to housing from street homelessness to owner-occupiers struggling with their bills to private renters experiencing problems. If people come to us sooner, we can do more to help.”

Official figures revealed that in 2015 800 households in Stirling contacted the council through the Housing Options system asking for help with a housing crisis. There were 302 homelessness applications from households in the city.

Stirling Council’s Housing Portfolio Holder, Councillor Violet Weir, said: “Tackling the lack of housing and fighting homelessness is a priority for Stirling Council. I welcome the new Street Clinic, which will be providing a much-needed service since sadly, many people in the Stirling area are facing housing issues.”
