After Brexit: Protect projects and EU workers

Top businesses have urged the government to push infrastructure projects and protect EU workers following Brexit.

Business groups have called on the government to push ahead with infrastructure projects and provide reassurance for EU workers living in the UK following the Brexit vote.

Five business groups have put pressure on the government, calling for planned projects like airport expansion, house building, rail and energy schemes to be given the go-ahead.

The British Chamber of Commerce, CBI, Federation of Small Businesses, Institute of Directors, and EEF, the manufacturer’s organisation, wrote: “The government needs to provide clear leadership and immediate action on two fronts.

“First an end to the uncertainty facing the EU nationals living and working in the UK.

“Second, progress on long-planned infrastructure projects. Last week’s delay to a decision on airport expansion must not set the tone for other schemes.”

The group also said the government must confirm that EU nationals can continue work and live in the UK.

Andrew Tyrie, the Chair of the Treasury select committee, said: “Protecting their rights is the only ethical position that can be taken and what’s more, the longer the uncertainty about this question persists the greater the risk of the economic downturn and economic consequences.”

Today, George Osborne will meet bank bosses to discuss Brexit.

The chancellor told MPs: “Over the past 10 days I have had numerous conversations with various business leaders and leaders of financial institutions, and…I will be meeting the heads of some of the major banks to discuss how we proceed.”

Home Secretary Teresa May has said residence rights would be a factor in negotiations.
