British Gas will offer customers who have smart meters installed will be eligible for eight hours of free electricity at weekends.
The scheme called FreeTime will allow customers to pick either Saturday or Sunday with the free hours being between 9am and 5pm and will be fixed until March 2018.
British Gas expects customers taking up the offer to make a saving of £60 a year. Of their 11 million customers, only around 2.5 million currently have smart meters installed.
The Company said that the new tariff would be their cheapest available.
Energy consumers wishing to join the scheme will be required to have a smart meter installed and switch to managing their account online.
Smart meters display how much energy is being consumed and its cost in almost real time. As the data is automatically sent by back to the energy supplier, estimated bills and meter readings will become a thing of the past. As a result, bills will be more accurate.
The meters will play a key part in the government’s strategy to make the UK more energy efficient and help to protect its energy supply.
Customers will be able to have a better understanding of energy consumption, allowing them to budget their energy costs more effectively.
Switching between energy providers will also become a much more simpler and quicker process.
It is expected that by the end of the decade, over 50 million smart meters will be installed across Britain.
