Communities Secretary Sajid Javid has unveiled government plans and extra funding to tackle the problem of rundown estates.
Developed by an independent advisory panel, chaired by Lord Heseltine and the Housing and Planning Minister Gavin Barwell, the national strategy will breathe new life into rundown estates.
As part of the new government strategy for regenerating deprived housing estates, an additional £32M of new funding has been made available, along with £140M from the estate regeneration fund.
Councils, housing associations and developers will be able to bid for a share of £172M of government investment to regenerate local neighbourhoods and provide better-quality housing.
The new national strategy will give guidance on renovating areas to address common challenges that can halt schemes, such as resident protection concerns or securing financial backing.
It is envisaged that the government’s plans will have the potential to provide thousands of additional homes over the next ten to 15 years.
The government’s has set out an ambitious housebuilding programme to deliver a million new homes by the end of the decade.
Communities Secretary, Sajid Javid, said: “Rundown estates offer huge potential to become new thriving communities providing homes, jobs and opportunities and places that work for everyone.
“That’s why we’re determined to ensure the success of regeneration projects through the national strategy to transform the lives of thousands of people by delivering better homes in better estates.”
Lord Heseltine said the national strategy would “guide the progress and provide aspiration for delivering tangible plans.”
