A recent project to install a pedestrian footbridge over the A63 dual carriageway near Princes Quay in Hull is nearing its completion with the completion of concrete works, landscaping, and assembly of wheelchair ramps all that remains before the bridge can be officially opened in Spring.
Following an offsite construction process the bridge was installed into its current, and final, position in November 2019 while the assembly of some wheelchair ramps, stairs, and installation of steel supports has taken place since this time.
Once completed, the bridge will be available to use by pedestrians and cyclists alike and will soon be granted an official name which will be decided by the pupils of Newland School for Girls and Archbishop Sentamu Academy.
The Highways England Senior Project Manager, James Leeming added: “It is fantastic that we are now in the final construction phase of the project but we still have a substantial amount of work to do.
“We want to thank the public for their patience and we are looking forward to reviewing the entries from the essay competition and are confident that the students of Hull will provide us with a great name for this iconic structure.
“This will ensure a real legacy is left for the people of Hull as the name was suggested by a local school pupil.”
Erection of this pedestrian bridge comes as part of a £355M scheme to upgrade the infrastructure on and surrounding Castle Street in Hull, with further plans to build a second pedestrian bridge over the A63 at Porter Street as well as split-level junctions between the A63 and Ferensway and Commercial Street.
Further redevelopment will take place with the widening of the eastbound carriageway between Princes Dock Street and Market Place, with some conservation work likewise scheduled for the Trinity Burial Ground to protect the rare bird and bats species which live there.
