Plans for new Sheffield retail quarter submitted

Sheffield City Council has submitted outline plans for the £480M retail development in Sheffield City Centre, which also includes the provision of offices and homes.

The Sheffield retail quarter project has been designed by Leonard Design Architects and sees over 900,000sq ft of leisure, office and residential space combined with a large retail area. It will seek to attract new retailers, bars and restaurants, with the plans primarily focussed on the areas around Barkers Pool, Pinstone Street and Moorhead.

Links with the existing shopping locations such as Division Street, The Moor and other surrounding areas will be created and it’s hoped the scheme will create around 2,500 jobs and bring in an additional £300M revenue a year into the city centre.

Historical buildings in the city centre such as Leah’s Yard and The Citadel will be preserved, in addition to the facades along Pinstone Street.

Hundreds of people took part in the consultation on the quarter prior to plans being submitted, with key topics being cycling provision, conservation of historic buildings and a quick timescale after the failed Sevenstone initiative., that was scrapped in 2013.

Councillor Leigh Bramall said: “The overriding message from the public consultation was to simply get on with it.

“Sheffield is crying out for a new city centre with new shops. We understand that there is scepticism after the previous Sevenstone scheme and this application shows that we are determined to make this happen, and happen fast.

“The purchase of the land is well underway and we will shortly be shortlisting the last three potential development partners. We’re right on track to start work on site next year, with the majority of shops opening in 2019.”

Subject to approval, Work is due to begin next year with the majority of shops to be opened in 2019.
