Youth unemployment to be tackled by government Taskforce

Earn or Learn Taskforce to implement measures.

The government has set out plans that it hopes will bring an end to long term youth unemployment.

Plans have been put forward by Matt Hancock, Paymaster General, who chairs the Earn or Learn Taskforce for the government.

The Taskforce is set to implement a culture that allows for “no excuses,” a culture, that the government believes will result in a supportive environment around youth unemployment.

A three-week programme will give those youths who are unemployed the support to ensure that they can find work or training within six months.

The government’s apprenticeships target is just one of the measures that the Taskforce will implement.

Apprenticeships have formed a huge part of the government’s drive to improve employment opportunities. By 2020, three million apprenticeships will be created and in recent months, the government has changed the legal status of apprenticeships so they have the same legal status as a degree.

The upshot of this is it will provide further options for young people.

Other measures that will be implemented by the Taskforce include ensuring that young claimants take a job, apprenticeship or unpaid work experience. If this doesn’t happen, they risk losing any benefits.

The ‘boot camp’ will see claimants become ready for work within six months, and youth benefit changes will be implemented in April 2017.

And Paymaster General, Matt Hancock, outlined how committed the Taskforce and the government are to bringing an end to long term youth unemployment.

He said: “We are determined to fulfill our commitments to end the welfare culture that is embedded in some of Britain’s most vulnerable communities.

“By working across government to make sure that every young person is in work or training, by opening up three million more apprenticeships, expanding traineeships and making sure that a life on benefits is simply not an option, we want to end rolling welfare dependency for good.

“We are absolutely committed to ending long term youth unemployment and building a country for workers, where nobody is defined by birth and everyone can achieve their potential.”
