Self house builders to get help finding plots

Housing Minister Brandon Lewis has announced the launch of new registers that will help self house builders find plots of land to build a home.

From 1 April this year, local councils will be required to keep a register of self house builders when making plans for future housing and land use.

The scheme is part of the government’s plans to increase the number of homes being built, with councils being given clear direction on the procedure to take when people register their interest in a land plot. It is hoped that by unlocking the self build industry, it can play a part in meeting the government’s ambitious housing targets.

The Housing and Planning Bill will also see local councils required to have enough build-ready plots to match the demand on their register.

Housing and Planning Minister Brandon Lewis said: “Many other countries have a track record of delivering large numbers of local homes through self-build and we’re determined to ensure self and custom housebuilding grows significantly.

“The new registers are a fantastic example of our commitment to double the number of custom and self build homes by 2020 – so anyone who wishes to design their dream house can do so.

“This government is committed to increasing housing supply and helping more people achieve their aspiration of home ownership – whether that’s buying on the open market through schemes like Help to Buy, or by building or commissioning their own home.”
