‘Transparent’ safety trucks to be trialled

South Korean electronics company, Samsung, are to trial its new “transparent” safety trucks that comes with large flat screen displays on the rear projecting the road ahead of the vehicle.

The trucks allow drivers behind the vehicle to see the road ahead without the need to pull into potentially oncoming traffic when over taking.

Samsung showcased the technology last June and has chosen to trial the technology in Argentina, where its road traffic accident statistics are amongst the highest in the world, with most of these taking place on two lane roads in incidents of attempted overtaking.

The technology sees a wireless front mounted camera capture the view of the road ahead of the truck and streams the image to a video wall consisting of four exterior monitors located on the back of the truck. The screens are waterproof, dustproof and are even visible in the dark.

Samsung said: “The next step is to perform the corresponding tests in order to comply with the existing national protocols and obtain the necessary permits and approvals. For this, Samsung is working together with safe driving NGOs and the government.”

It is hoped that if the four month trial is successful, the technology would be made available worldwide later in the year and play a part in improving the safety of Heavy Goods Vehicles and save lives.
