Building Services Contract awarded for Heathrow Terminal 3

SPIE UK has been awarded a £745,000 contract at London Heathrow which will put the finishing touches to an Integrated Baggage Building linking Terminals 3 and 5.

The specialist contractor will provide a comprehensive package of lighting and small power improvements – in addition to a thorough heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and building management system (BMS) upgrade – at Heathrow’s brand new Hold Baggage Screening room.

Housed within the Terminal 3 Integrated Baggage Building, the new and improved facility will enable baggage screening operations from terminals 1 through 4 to take place in a single dedicated space.

Mace Group made the appointment earlier in the week in recognition of the contractor’s sterling track record. For almost a decade, SPIE has successfully delivered baggage upgrade works at the airport.

Past projects include the creation of a 1.3km baggage tunnel linking T5 to the central terminal area in T3, and the Western Interface Building, which receives baggage from T5 before ferrying it on to other terminals.

More latterly, SPIE has conducted building services works at the T3 Integrated Baggage Building. This, combined with the baggage tunnel and Western Interface Building projects, will speed up baggage volume movement while reducing manual handling and vehicle use.

“We’re delighted to have once again been selected for this transformative work at Heathrow Airport’s busy Terminal 3,” said Nic Hopper, General Manager of Building Services at SPIE UK. “We’re pleased to be partnering with Mace Group and know that the Building Services team will once again deliver beyond expectations for the new integrated Hold Baggage Screening room.”

Leon Clark, Project Manager for Heathrow Airports Limited, added: “SPIE was selected for this contract because of their extensive experience and solid reputation for high-quality work already demonstrated here at Heathrow and on similar airport baggage upgrade schemes. SPIE’s specialist multi-technical solutions and experience in the aviation sector means we can be confident that these works will be successfully completed on time.”

The electrical, HVAC and BMS works are due for completion by October 2017.
