Havering College cements the future

Havering College is set to welcome an £11M Construction, Infrastructure Skills & Innovation Centre to its Rainham campus.

The proposed facility will help develop the careers of London’s aspiring students in construction and engineering, as well as attracting students from across the country, to prepare them for a future in infrastructure.

Jointly funded by Havering College and the GLA, the college is being backed by east London’s biggest employers. The ‘Career’ College will work with to develop the curriculum and training programmes, as well as offering work experience and employment opportunities to students as they reach graduation. Employer partners include: L&Q, Rooff Construction, Vinci Facilities, Clarion Housing Group, and many more.

Founded by the Government in 2013, Career Colleges have an employer-led curriculum to bridge the skills gap in vocational occupations, they now deliver courses to equip 14-19 year-olds with the skills they need to succeed.

Students will learn a wide-range of advanced construction curriculum, from modern methods of construction, to Building Information Modelling and Computer Aided Design, and have access to Virtual Engineering at the ‘CISIC Augmented Reality’ facility. An innovative curriculum will provide traditional FE & HE routes alongside apprenticeship and short-course provision.

Lord Kenneth Baker, Former Education Secretary Trustee and Founder of the Career College Trust, said: “We have huge support from industry and employers – as a result students are being equipped with relevant, real world skills, which is of benefit to both them and to UK industry as a whole.

“I am delighted to see our Career College network growing. I look forward to seeing further growth and success over the coming years.”

Maria Thompson, chief executive for Havering College, said: “We are so excited for the facility to open and look forward to supporting our students into their future careers in skilled construction and engineering. London is at the centre of huge infrastructure projects, such as HS2 and Crossrail, and we need to ensure we have the workforce to deliver.”

The plan is for the CISIC to be at the centre of a network of national centres that deliver high quality and consistent construction skills training. The CISIC is predicted to deliver a contribution of over £30M to the local economy over the next ten years.
