“Overwhelming response” to Heathrow logistics hubs

More than 120 sites across the country have applied to help deliver an expanded Heathrow Airport by hosting one of four hugely ambitious logistics hubs.

The hubs themselves form an integral part of Heathrow’s efforts to bring small and medium-sized enterprises back into the fold by decentralising the supply chain.

Crucially, each logistics hub will help pioneer off-site manufacturing techniques, thereby reducing the cost of construction while also curbing emissions and cultivating a brand new industry for the UK.

Heathrow’s expansion is poised to become the largest privately-funded infrastructure initiative in Europe today. By endorsing off-site manufacturing on such a high-profile project, Heathrow hopes to bring about a meaningful step-change for UK construction – one that gives British businesses the competitive edge in a hitherto untapped sector.

The airport will be the first UK infrastructure scheme to make large-scale use of logistics hubs. The aim is to build as much off-site as possible. Components will be pre-assembled off-site before being transported to Heathrow in consolidated loads as required.

Together we’ll build an expanded Heathrow – boosting growth outside London, leaving a world-class construction legacy for the UK and delivering expansion faster, cheaper and with less impact on our local communities.”

Now, all applications will be considered by Heathrow, with a list of potential sites expected to be announced later on in the year.
