Kier wins multi-million-pound project

Kier has been contracted to carry out a multi-million-pound project for Winchester College entailing the construction of first-class facilities by February 2022.

The first-class facilities in question will include a new, state-of-the-art, 7,314sq m sports hub and the modernisation of the college’s design and technology building, nicknamed the ‘Mill’ by staff and students.

Trevor White, Operations Director, Kier Regional Building Southern stated: “Working collaboratively with Winchester College, we are delighted to be carrying out this modernisation programme that will offer truly excellent facilities for its pupils.

“This project combines our experience within the education and heritage sectors, providing new infrastructure that looks in keeping with a school steeped in history. We look forward to working with our local supply chain and craftspeople, the school and its pupils and the wider community as we look to leave a lasting legacy in the area.”

The sports hub will feature three interconnecting buildings which will contain an impressive: 1,400sq m multifunctional sports hall, a viewing gallery, a 25m x 13m six lane swimming pool, a seven-booth rifle range, and five squash courts.

Kier, a leading infrastructure, building, development, and housing service group, will work closely with local supply chains throughout the Winchester College project in order to benefit the local economy.

The Southern Campus PE Centre was constructed in the 1960s and, at over 50 years old, required substantial modernisation to keep up with the new demands of the college in modern times, with attendance at the college in the 60s being 550 whereas attendance is now up to 700.

Steven Little, Bursar, Winchester College added: “We are delighted that Kier has been appointed to transform the school’s existing PE Centre in to a state-of-the-art Sports Centre, This project, which will bring to one of the country’s oldest schools, the most modern and exciting of facilities, has been planned for over many years and will give us a centre of sporting excellence we can all be proud of.”
