Sir James Bevan, the new Chief Executive of the Environment Agency will be in Devon this Friday to visit the completed first phase of the Exeter flood defence scheme at Haven Banks.
Sir James, the former UK High Commissioner to India, took up his new role last month and has recently visited Cumbria to view the flood devastation caused by Storm Desmond.
On his new role, Sir James commented: “One of the biggest challenges of our time is protecting the environment and promoting growth. We need to do both and I look forward to playing my part in that. The Environment Agency is a great organisation, which makes an important contribution to our country. It will be an honour and a privilege to lead it.”
He will visit Devon to see the building of the new Exeter flood defence scheme and understand the design challenges of the second phase at Exeter Quay and Bonhay Gardens.
Sir James plans to visit all 16 of the Environment Agency’s areas during his first 100 days of office.
Speaking on the Cumbrian floods, Sir James said: “Whenever an exceptional event happens it’s important to review what happened and how to prepare for the future. With a £60M fund to help with recovery in Cumbria, in addition to the £2.3Bn Government have committed to protect homes from floods across the country, we have the resources necessary to manage flood risk in England.
“The National Flood Resilience Review and the Cumbria Floods Partnership give Government, the Environment Agency and community groups the forums to review and ensure we are directing our resources to protect people most effectively.”
