As part of its effort to encourage a more diverse workforce, Transport for London (TfL) has launched its first range of safety clothing designed specifically for women.
Following a successful six-week trial, which ran from the end of July to September, the new clothing made for TfL’s female staff will include a larger choice of high-visibility jackets, trousers, gloves and adjustable eye protection.
New Year will see the introduction of safety boots and a tailoring service to give female employees access to better-fitted, safer Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
The universal sizing of PPE, which is commonplace within the engineering and construction sectors, can cause sizing problems for female members of staff. Feedback from female members of staff has revealed that for years women have had to resort to safety pins or rolling up clothing that can mean movements being restricted and pose a trip hazard.
The introduction of women’s PPE is a part of Transport for London’s 100 Years of Women in Transport campaign, which celebrates the role of women in the industry.
TfL is working with Crossrail, the Department for Transport, Network Rail, the Women’s Transportation Seminar and Women’s Engineering Society and others to celebrate the contribution that women have and continue to make to the transport industry.
Melanie Ogden, Northern Line Extension Tunnels and Shafts Project Manager, commented: “Finding PPE that fits has always been a challenge for women in engineering, whether it’s rolling up sleeves, holding up trousers or having to wear multiple pairs of socks just to keep our shoes on. A ‘one size fits all’ approach for men and women hasn’t worked, which is why it’s great to see TfL taking a lead in this area.
“Taking part in the trial to source new women’s PPE has been enjoyable and has resulted in comfortable clothing that allows us to move more freely and work more effectively.”
