£25M boost for North Yorkshire drivers

Drivers in North Yorkshire are set to benefit from an extra £25.6M investment that will help to reduce delays and provide a boost to local economy.

The investment will take the total investment in the region’s roads to over £150M by 2021.

North Yorkshire County Council will be given the funding to spend the money where it most needed, with rural roads to undergo resurfacing work during the next five years.

Roads that link surrounding villages to the towns of Catterick, Harrogate, Malton, Northallerton, Scarborough, Selby, Skipton, Thirsk are all set to benefit.

It is envisaged that by providing extra targeted maintenance investment, the government will be able to improve vital road links in rural areas to boost local businesses and help deliver its long term economic plan for the region.

The Chancellor George Osborne announced an extra £1.6M in his Budget on Wednesday for North Yorkshire to repair over 30,000 potholes. This is in addition to a £24M roads funding boost also revealed by the Chancellor.

Transport Minister Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon said: “We are determined to build a Northern Powerhouse and investing an extra £25.6 million in North Yorkshire’s roads will help cut delays and boost the local economy.

“This funding will allow the council to carry out extra maintenance work and help prevent potholes from forming, keeping roads fit for the future.”

The region is also set to receive an extra £4.3M in flood recovery funding from the Department of Transport following the impact of the devastating storms over the winter, taking the total given to Yorkshire and the Humber by the government to more than £36M.
