Works have started on a circa £70M housing development for army families at Tidworth in Wiltshire.
Housebuilder Hill will construct 322 new three and four bedroom homes for service personnel and their families, on behalf of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO).
The homes will be built for army families based at barracks on and around Salisbury Plain.
The homes will incorporate red bricks and traditional roof styles that feature in surrounding villages, to complement existing properties in the area, along with five open spaces.
Neal Walters, DIO Project Manager, said: “This major housing project is one example of how we’re investing in quality accommodation for our armed forces and their families. This development also complements our wider plans for the area which will support the return of British troops from Germany in 2019.”
Kieran Larkin, Deputy Chief Executive at Hill, commented: “We are delighted to be partnering with the Ministry of Defence (MOD) in what will be our largest single contract to date. This is not only a completely new sector for us at Hill, but it’s also our first project in Wiltshire, and is a fantastic opportunity to create homes for service personnel. It is a project that the whole team are very proud to be working on.”
The homes are in addition to the circa £1Bn that the MOD will be investing, as part of the Army Basing Programme, which will provide further 1,017 new service family homes, about 2,500 bed spaces for single soldiers and nearly 250 other buildings such as officers, garages, workshops and mess facilities. The package will accommodate the extra 4,000 extra service personnel and their families in relocating to Salisbury Plain by 2019.
The Ministry of Defence together with Wiltshire Council, has made significant investment in Tidworth in recent years, providing sporting and other facilities to the local area, including the Tidworth Leisure Centre and Library which are open to the whole community.
Along with providing quality facilities for the armed forces, the developments are expected to bring an economic boost to the local economy.
