Film promoting Northern Powerhouse released

A film showcasing Chancellor George Osborne’s flagship scheme, the Northern Powerhouse, is being promoted by British embassies across the world.

The film running just under three minutes long highlights the huge investment being made by the government in region – £150Bn on health, £45Bn on schools and £13Bn on transport – and features the skills and facilities the Northern Powerhouse has to offer such as advanced manufacturing, automotive and aerospace and the creative industries.

Also included in the film is Salford’s MediaCity, Tees Valley’s PD Ports and Liverpool’s Exhibition Centre, which will play host to this year’s International Festival of Business.

Northern Powerhouse Minister James Wharton said: “The Northern Powerhouse is a global investment hotspot and we are clear it is ready and open for business.

“This film will help showcase the best of what the north has to offer the world and I look forward to welcoming those bold and ambitious businesses looking to buy into this.”

The film is the latest push by the government to promote the Northern Powerhouse project as an attractive destination for trade and investment. The process got underway last July with the Prime Minister and Business Secretary visiting Singapore and Malaysia on a trade mission.

The Chancellor George Osborne also led a high profile visit to China, which highlighted £24Bn worth of investment opportunities in the project.

The government has allocated £15M worth of funding for a series of trade missions and events to continue these efforts. An additional £7M will fund a Northern Powerhouse Investment Taskforce, which will look to unite civic leaders and Northern businesses to give a single internationally competitive offer to do business across the world.

In recent spending reviews, the government has committed to invest in major new projects in the region including the Sir Henry Royce Institute in Manchester, Cognitive Computing Centre in Cheshire, and Newcastle’s Institute for Ageing, and Manchester’s National Graphene Institute.
