Royal visit for Manchester Engineering Campus Development

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD) last week to mark the start of construction on site.

Balfour Beatty have recently began advanced works on site and are also developing the building’s design, programme and delivery strategy as construction partner for the University’s flagship £350 million engineering campus.

The Royal couple had earlier visited the University’s £61m National Graphene Institute, where they had the opportunity to view the world’s first graphene car.

It is envisaged that the Manchester Engineering Campus will revolutionise the way in which the University educates future engineers.

It will form part of the University’s Capital Programme that will look to provide a world-class teaching, learning and research campus to develop future engineers and innovators.

Mark Pearson, Balfour Beatty Project Director, said: “It was an honour to welcome the Royal couple to our site and for recognition to be given to this great investment in science and engineering. We have a number of significant and exciting infrastructure projects in the UK and the creation of MECD contributes to the development of talent needed to deliver the pipeline of projects.”

MECD, procured under the University’s Construction Partnering Framework, represents one of the biggest single construction projects ever undertaken by a higher education institution in the UK.
